The Republic of Korea Armed Forces use the K1 series of battle tanks. Early concepts of the car were based on the Chrysler XM1, and it was developed by Hyundai Precision in the late 1980s. Torsion bars, a river-crossing kit, hydro-pneumatic suspension, and other features were among the variations.

The K1 has been available in a number of versions, each of which has become more costly over time. Since 2014, Hyundai Rotem, General Dynamics, and Chrysler Defense have been manufacturing the K1E1, the most recent iteration. These K1E1 vehicles have been constructed in a total  of 1,027.
