Built at a cost of $32 million, the bridge spans 2,277 meters across the Tagus River in Lisbon, Portugal, and is an important traffic hub as well as a potent symbol of the nation’s progress toward democracy and independence. As a result of this nonviolent revolution, the bridge was renamed “Ponte 25 de Abril” to honor the date of the revolution and represent Portugal’s shift to democracy.
