The attack submarine USS Jefferson City is of the LA class. This indicates that the USS Jefferson City is a fast attack submarine with nuclear propulsion and is a member of the Los Angeles class. The subs are also referred to as the 688 (Six-Eighty-Eight) class; this designation comes from the SSN-668, the hull number of the class’s lead ship, the Los Angeles. There are two generations in the Los Angeles class.

It bears the name of Jefferson City, the capital of Missouri, which was given its name in honor of the Founding Father Thomas Jefferson. Though construction began on September 21, 1987, the USS Jefferson City has just departed for its six-month mission.
The USS Jefferson City was originally put into service in February 1992, following five years of construction, and is currently stationed at the Naval Station in Pearl Harbor. Following its most recent technological upgrades and enhancements is this deployment. The motto of the 362 foot long structure is “When Any Exigence Calls.”
