Off the coast of southwest Turkey is the shipwreck known as Uluburun, which means “Grand Cape” in Turkish. Evidence from the ship’s cargo suggests that the Uluburun wreck, which was recovered in 1982, sailed from Cyprus. From the looks of her load, which comprised raw materials, luxury goods, and gifts from the king, it was heading west of Cyprus.

A boxwood tablet with ivory hinges, one hundred and seventy-five blue, lavender, and turquoise glass ingots, and a gold scarab bearing Nefertiti’s name were among the interesting items on board. The artifacts unearthed so far are kept in Turkey’s Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology, and the things onboard originated from ten distinct cultures.
