Completed in 1959, Qiandao Lake, sometimes referred to as “Thousand Island Lake,” is a stunning artificial freshwater lake in China. Though it is submerged under a more recent body of water, Shi Cheng is an ancient city that dates much further back. In the Eastern Han Dynasty, between the years 25 and 200 A.D., Shi Cheng was constructed.

After the city was eventually abandoned, Shi Cheng was purposefully flooded. China intended to create Qiandao Lake by inundating the city with water from the Xin’an Dam. This mystery Atlantis-like city, located 131 feet below the surface of Qiandao, has stayed amazingly intact since there were no corrosive chemicals in the water.
