Rikers Island in New York is a prison island.


Situated on New York’s East River, Rikers Island is a prison island. At a cost to American taxpayers of almost $860 million annually, it is the largest correctional facility in the world. The island has eleven distinct prisons. The prison complex has classrooms, playgrounds, chapels, gyms, stores, hair salons, bakeries, power stations, bus depots, and even car wash facilities in addition to the actual inmate quarters.
