Dense forests formerly covered Sumadija, a central region of Serbia virtually unexplored by tourists. But now, a portion of it is covered with cities, where people like this man, who is shown in Sebastian Steveniers’ photo “Sumadija,” pass by. A finalist for LensCulture, Steveniers referred to Sumadija as a “fairytale.”

According to Steveniers, the city’s “daily life” was merged into a “magic-realistic” world, which made him feel “strange…as an outsider.” He meant for his picture to be an exercise in “light-hearted surrealism,” complete with haphazard small white bunnies running about a man who was reading the newspaper.
