1975: Banqiao Dam, Chinese People’s Republic, Henan Province

Constructed in 1952 as a groundwater dam, Banqiao was meant to withstand flooding. Cracks developed as a result of serious mistakes committed during the dam’s construction. Following that, the tropical cyclone “Nina” put too much strain on the dam, causing floods that resulted in the deaths of 26,000 people.
