When an American hears the term “mangrove forest,” they often picture the verdant tangles of trees found in Florida. That isn’t the case in Vietnam during the winter, though. This image of a fisherman paddling through a mangrove forest was captured by Trung Pham Huy at Tam Giang Lagoon in Hue.

Mangroves reveal their white trunks and branches as their leaves fall in the winter. This gives the impression that the fisherman is canoeing through a spooky woodland that resembles the underworld. It’s understandable why Huy’s photo from the 2021 Drone Photo Contest took home prizes.
