Diana had owned this Cartier Tank Francaise watch since the 1990s. Her father, John Spencer, gave her the watch as a present before he passed away in 1992. She stopped wearing the Patek Philippe that Prince Charles had given her in 1996 and began to wear the gift from her father.

When Prince William and Harry visited Kensington Palace following her passing, they were asked to select a memento from her belongings. Prince Harry selected an engagement ring, while Prince William selected the Tank Francaise. A few years later, the two exchanged keepsakes.
