Though so many stars have appeared on The Muppets since Alice debuted, we believe most people over thirty would agree he was among the top guest stars of all time.
Mixing the worlds of rock ‘n’ roll with family entertainment in a way never seen before, Alice Cooper’s performance on The Muppet Show in 1978 was undoubtedly a turning point in television history. Along with the charming Muppet ensemble, Cooper performed some of his best hits, including “Welcome to My Nightmare” and “School’s Out,” in the episode that ran during the third season.
The way this episode combined Cooper’s shock-rock character into the playful Muppets without sacrificing their attractiveness of either made it very unforgettable. Known for his theatrical and even macabre stage demeanor, Cooper melded rather naturally with the Muppets’ sense of humor. Cooper’s image was shown in the episode as he tried to sell his soul to the devil—played by a Muppet—only to discover the Muppets already have it.
This guest appearance stretched limits and demonstrated that kids’ entertainment might be edgy and cool, therefore beyond mere amusement. It created a new benchmark for what a family variety show could be and cleared the path for more varied and surprising guest stars going forward. For many viewers, it was their first taste of Alice Cooper and rock music in general, therefore forming an experience they would recall for decades to come.
