9. Beamed Energy Propulsion

Using outside energy sources to heat or accelerate fuel, beamed energy propulsion technology marks a paradigm change in our perspective on spaceship power. Ground-based or space-based energy transmitters—such as lasers or microwaves—direct concentrated beams of electromagnetic energy (such as those used in this system) to a receiving spacecraft. Potential elimination of the need for onboard power generation is achieved by using the obtained energy to heat propellant or power electric propulsion systems. Recent developments in energy conversion efficiency and beam focusing technologies have made this method progressively feasible for many uses. Current work addresses issues with beam pointing precision and atmospheric influences for ground-based systems as well as creates more effective energy reception devices.
