8. Quairading Pink Lake, Australia

In Western Australia, Quairading Pink Lake exhibits a special phenomena whereby the lake is split in two different colors: pink on one side and blue on the other. An internal barrier of natural minerals causing varying salinity levels and chemical compositions inside the same lake causes this rare event. This amazing split is a result of the lake bed’s geological structure, created during millennia of mineral deposit deposition. Whereas the blue side preserves different mineral compositions and biological communities, the pink side has more concentrations of salt and particular algae species. This natural division offers researchers a unique chance to investigate how minute variations in environmental variables could cause significant changes in the development of ecosystems.
