7. Lake MacDonnell, Australia

Separated just by a small road, Lake MacDonnell in South Australia is one of the most photographed pink lakes because of its remarkable contrast with a nearby blue-green lake. The lake’s strong pink hue comes from a perfect storm of geological and biological elements including unique salt-tolerant bacteria, rapid evaporation rates, and peculiar mineral compositions in the underlying soil. Ancient marine deposits and later geological events that produced the ideal environment for halophilic bacteria to flourish have a connection to the formation of the lake. Lake MacDonnell’s high salt concentration results in thick crusts of crystalline salt along the coastline, creating natural platforms reflecting the pink waters in amazing configurations.
