6. Torrevieja Pink Lake, Spain

One of the most important salt lakes in Europe, the Pink Lake of Torrevieja sits on Costa Blanca in Spain. Combining halobacteria with particular algae species that flourish in its hypersaline habitat gives this amazing water body its pink hue. Given that the lake was created by a convoluted tectonic activity and marine regression millions of years ago, its geological background is especially fascinating. Unique salt-tolerant plants and crystalline salt formations that produce an unearthly habitat define the surroundings. Although most aquatic species cannot survive in the lake due of its high salt concentration, it offers ideal circumstances for flamingos that eat the algae causing the pink hue.
