4. Hutt Lagoon, Australia

Because of its remarkable capacity to change colors over the day, moving between vivid pink, lilac, and even deep purple hues, Hutt Lagoon is the most unusual pink lake found anywhere. The presence of particular carotenoid-producing algae, Dunaliella salina, together with unusual geological factors influencing light reflection and absorption, causes this amazing color-changing phenomena. The only pink lake in the world with such striking color transitions is the lagoon; its bed consists of a unique sort of gypsum crust that accentuates the color fluctuations. Comprising almost 14 kilometers along Western Australia’s coral coast, the lake is the largest naturally occurring beta-carotene producing location in the world. Scientists have found that the lake’s unusual color-changing qualities result from its different geological composition, which includes uncommon mineral deposits and a special subterranean water system.
