5. Traditional Navajo Cultural Immersion
Within the hallowed environment of Antelope Canyon, this unique encounter provides guests with a deep dive into real Navajo culture and customs. Starting with a traditional blessing ceremony at the canyon’s entrance, this intensive program is run under direction by Navajo elders and cultural consultants. Learning about the great spiritual importance of the canyon to the Navajo people—who refer to it as “Tsé bighánílíní,” meaning “the place where water runs through rocks”—participants The program consists in courses in basic Navajo language, displays of traditional crafts including weaving and silversmithing, and traditional storytelling events including tales about the canyon. Visitors learn about medicinal plants native to the area, help to prepare and share traditional Navajo dishes, and get to see the close relationship between the Navajo people and their ancestral grounds. The highlight consists in a unique performance of traditional songs and dances accompanied by explanations of their cultural relevance and part in Navajo rituals.

The late afternoon light paints Antelope Canyon and its environs a canvas of rich hues and long shadows. This trip brings guests to key spots around the canyon to see the striking change of the terrain as the sun sets. The shifting light produces amazing picture chances of the canyon and the huge desert area. Guides relate tales of how the Navajo people have survived in a difficult environment for millennia and of desert survival skills.
