While we sleep, our bodies are still active and require some nourishment to make the most of that time. Even though digestion will happen regardless of how you sleep, laying on your left side will enable your body to accomplish the process with the least amount of effort. This is so because lying on the left side of the body makes it easier for food to enter the big intestine because our stomachs are located on the left side of the abdomen. Additionally, it prevents the pancreas from being directly on top of the stomach, allowing the free flow of digestive enzymes.
