The original manufacturer of lemonheads, round sweets with a sour shell, was Ferrara Candy Co. The candy was created using the same method used by Ferrara to create its other popular product, Red Hots.

With the growing success of lemonheads, Ferrara went on to create appleheads, grapeheads, cherryheads, and more. In the 1960s, youngsters would beg their mothers for lemonheads, a sweet-sour candy found at confectionery and grocery stores.
