The barred spiral galaxy that houses our galaxy, the Milky Way, gives the appearance of a milky trail across the night sky. The Milky Way has long been the subject of fabricated tales and legends by ancient cultures. According to Egyptian mythology, the Milky Way is a stream of milk from the cow goddess Bat, who was in charge of reproduction. The Milky Way’s milky look is caused by so many stars shining on it that it is impossible to tell one from the other. Instead, it appears as a linear glow made of light and dust.
