In the 1950s, Soviet soldiers fed polar bears.

Hand-feeding a polar bear requires courage, but these Soviet soldiers did just that. The Chukchi Peninsula in the Soviet Union is where this photo was taken. It can get as cold as 25 degrees below zero in this hostile environment, and the snow can get so deep that it can be difficult for animals to find food. The soldiers saved the starving mother polar bear and her children by feeding them condensed milk in tin cans, which they had enough of. The mother bear gave her cubs some milk after licking the can. This arctic bear must have become mellow from near starvation. One of the world’s most violent animals is a mother polar bear defending her offspring.
