The amazing tale of Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew of the appropriately named Endurance’s survival on the icy Antarctic ice was depicted in the 2002 film. Shackleton was competing to reach the South Pole first, but Roald Amundsen beat him there in 1911. Shackleton’s stamina would be put to the test on the return journey. The ship got stuck in the thinning ice, and the heavy ice gradually crushed it to pieces. Before venturing out into the open ocean in life rafts to arrive at a populated island, the captain and crew managed to live by camping on the ice for 497 days.
