Beautiful 50-foot blue Antarctic ice monolith.

Some of the images that are making the rounds on the internet suggest that this is a flash-frozen tsunami wave, however that is false information. In fact, this is a really amazing illustration of the blue ice occurrence in nature. The ice is so thick that only blue light is reflected back from it when light travels through it because the red wave lengths are filtered out. The enormous ice monolith in Antarctica, which is made of compressed ice with microscopic air bubbles, is always frozen, however some ice does melt during the summer. Winter brings with it the addition of new layers.
