In 1989, a woman poses for a picture against the backdrop of a tornado.

This girl appears composed and cool while an F-1 tornado whirls around her; she is reportedly Audra Thomas of Beaver City, Nebraska. Since Audra is from Nebraska, we assume that she is accustomed to tornado activity. Although the twister appears to be approaching her, it is actually a mile distant. The barn on her family’s property, which is seen in the distance, is destroyed by the funnel cloud as it approaches. For safety concerns, the National Weather Service discourages individuals from taking pictures with tornadoes. Although Marrilee, Audra’s mother, took the picture, we might assume from looking at it that her mother was upset when she realized what her daughter was doing.
