Because of its resemblance to a male organ, Atretochoana eiselti is sometimes known by this term.

The *male organ* snake, Atretochoana eiselti, is so named because, well, just take a look at it. But in reality, it is not a snake at all. In reality, it’s an amphibian without legs. The penis snake is special in more ways than one. It is also the biggest non-lunging tetrapod. Rather, it has a respiratory system that exchanges oxygen through the skin into a network of microscopic capillaries that are located just beneath the skin’s surface. This type of snake was rediscovered in 2011 after being unknown for a century due to the preservation of two specimens collected by Sir Graham Hales in the Brazilian rainforest in the late 19th century.
