When this tornado hit Waynoka, Oklahoma, in May 1898, someone had a camera ready to record the whirlwind. Some say that storm chasing was being done by the two unidentified gentlemen when this picture was taken, but the first known storm chaser is David Hoadley, who was born in 1938—40 years after the picture was shot. In 1956, Hoadley started working as a storm chaser in North Dakota, utilizing information from neighboring airports and weather agencies. Hoadley established the periodical “Storm Track.” If the folks in this photo were storm chasing, they were probably just enthusiasts for extreme weather.
