Urban legend: In 1996, a bear inside his tent mauled him to death. This is the last picture that Michio Hoshino took, as discovered on his camera.

Japanese-born Michio Hoshino was an award-winning nature photographer who focused on capturing images of Alaskan wildlife, and he was frequently likened to Ansel Adams. But Michio Hoshino’s own narrative ended tragically in 1996 in Kurilshoye Lake in Russia. While on assignment in Russia, a brown bear killed him inside his own tent. This is purportedly the last snapshot that Hoshino ever took, and it features his killer. Brown bears typically don’t attack people unless they are provoked or feel in danger. When a female bear is defending her young, she can be very violent.
[Fact Check]: Michio Hoshino, the alleged victim mentioned in the text that goes with this picture, was a real wildlife photographer who passed away in August 1996 on the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia after being mauled by a brown bear. As an entry for a Worth1000 Photoshop competition, participants were asked to create “a last-photo hoax: the final photograph of the victim, whoever he might be, had a camera on him right before ‘it’ happens.” However, neither Hoshino nor the circumstances surrounding his death are depicted in this picture.
