In the interim, in Alaska.

In contrast to what this picture and dramatic news reports claim, bear assaults on humans are uncommon. Although bee stings and snake bites are more likely to cause death for visitors to Alaska’s backcountry than bear maulings, people nevertheless dread bears more than these natural predators. The fear of being devoured by a wild animal, such as a bear, is innate in human nature. This could be an unconscious fear from our pioneer past. However, anytime we enter a wild animal’s native habitat—especially that of an apex predator—we must be vigilant and refrain from engaging in any activity that can incite an attack, like riding a bike.
