The Phares dans la Tempete, la Jument lighthouse, located on the northwest coast of France, close to Brittany, is almost completely engulfed by a massive wave in this now-famous photo taken by Jean Guichard in 1989. The lighthouse keeper, Theodore Malgorne, may appear to be calmly observing the monster waves during this storm, but he is actually waiting for rescue. The photo was taken in 1989. A couple of Malgorne’s coworkers are securely hidden inside the lighthouse and out of danger. The lighthouse appears to be strong enough to topple it, but despite this, it only sustained minor damage and is still standing today.
