14. Malta’s Marsaxlokk
On the island of Malta, there is a vibrant fishermen’s community called Marsaxlokk. Because there are no storms in this harbor, the yellow sandstone houses stand so close to the water, leaving only two lanes for car traffic and pedestrians. Only 3,000 or so people call Marsaxlokk home. Like their fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers, the majority of these people are fishermen.
