9. Behavioral Adaptations for Survival

Capybaras’ survival techniques show amazing behavioural adaptations evolved over millions of years. They keep a sophisticated social structure whereby the group relaxes or feeds while certain sentries monitor for predators alternately. Threatened, they can rapidly alert the whole group with different vocalisations and synchronised motions. Equally complex is their escape behaviour; they can swim or dive for long stretches and run at speeds up to 35 km per hour. Using ritualised displays and vocalisations to create and preserve hierarchies without major physical confrontation, they have evolved complex social rules for handling disagreement inside groups. Their daily activity patterns demonstrate flexibility in becoming more nocturnal in places with great human presence or preserving diurnal activities in safer areas; they are precisely synchronised with environmental variables.
