9. The Monster Universe
Found Year: 2007.
Who Found It: UMass colleagues Min Run
Place: 12.4 billion light-years away from Earth
In the never-ending quest to understand the formation of galaxies and the stars that inhabit them, Dr. Ken-ichi Tadaki and colleagues from the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan journeyed to Chile to examine COSMOS-AzTEC-1, also referred to as the Monster Galaxy.

The Monster Galaxy, which is forming stars 1,000 times faster than the Milky Way, received its moniker from its vast size and speed of expansion rather than from any potential monsters. COSMOS-AzTEC-1 is expanding at a rate 10 times quicker than that of a typical starburst galaxy, which is faster than Amazon’s expansion in the 2000s (in comparison to its competitors).
