Single-star systems are ones in which planets orbit a single star in a solar system similar to the one in which Earth is located—just as Earth orbits the Sun. Although multi-star systems do exist in the universe, they often lack planets. On the other hand, in these kinds of systems, stars orbit one another.

Although they are not the largest, triple-star systems are the most prevalent kind of multi-star systems in the cosmos. The only two known septuple star systems, AR Cassiopeiae and Nu Scorpii, hold that distinction.
