11. Eavesdropping On Conversations and Then Joining In

Everybody here is guilty of listening in on other people’s chats. But have you ever listened, then you find yourself sucked into the discussion? Realising you have been caught is an embarrassing situation from which you now have to negotiate social dynamics of participation. It is somewhat awkward as, although you are attempting to seem as though you have no idea what is happening, you have been listening to the whole conversation for the past several minutes. Uncertain of how to help without disclosing that you were covertly listening, you can experience a mix of shame and curiosity. This might cause some humorous interactions as you try to catch up on the background while yet looking laid back and involved. Perhaps you are nodding or laughing along, trying to fit right into the conversation. This encounter reminds us that occasionally curiosity can lead us into unanticipated and usually funny circumstances and emphasises the thin line separating social interaction from violation of privacy.

12. Looking At Other Items When Someone Is In Front Of What You Actually Want At The Grocery Store

“This can of olives is super interesting; let me stare at it for a few more minutes until that person moves out of my way; I don’t really want olives.” You find yourself in this strange circumstance at the grocery store, when someone is obstructing your access to the item you most need. Rather of gently requesting they relocate, you decide to show interest in other things in hopes they would follow the cue and turn aside. Although it would be far more difficult, asking the individual whether you could take the item they are standing in front of would be reasonable. There is a funny conundrum created by the internal conflict between wanting to be courteous and trying to be efficient. Keeping an eye on the person obstructing your route, you might gaze at the olives then at other products on the shelf. This situation captures the daily social difficulties we encounter and emphasises how easily our own hesitations and social conventions may complicate even basic chores.
