2. Light Physics Phenomenon

The amazing light shows in Antelope Canyon come from a special mix of physical events that scientists have only now started to completely grasp. Sunlight entering the canyon’s small gaps at the top generates what physicists refer to as “light shafts,” or “light beams,” from the bent walls. Tyndall scattering, a mechanism wherein light particles mix with dust and atmospheric moisture, makes these beams genuinely visible. Following exact mathematical patterns astronomers can predict, the strength and direction of these beams vary with the day and seasons. Recent research indicates that the design of the canyon provides ideal circumstances for this light display; the angles and curves of the walls naturally reflect and disperse this light show.
