2. Dark Matter
Found Year: 1998
It was discovered by Adam Riess, Brian Schmidt, and Saul Permutter.
Location: All around the place
Only five percent of the cosmos is made up of the familiar, non-dark matter that we know and love. Dark matter and, to a lesser extent, dark energy comprise most of the cosmos. Dark energy makes up two thirds of the environment we live in in space. Since its discovery in the late 1990s, scientists have been baffled by it.

Dark energy is believed to be the cause of the universe’s increasing expansion, whilst dark matter slows it down. The first indications of dark energy came from measurements of supernovae. In 2002, additional proof was obtained from a study of 250,000 galaxies and gravitational lensing data.
