6. Environmental Impact and Ecosystem Engineering

Recent ecological research has shown that capybaras are major ecosystem engineers, drastically changing their habitat to advantage many other species. Their movement patterns build networks of trails acting as wildlife corridors, and their grazing habits produce and preserve particular vegetation forms that give other species habitat. Studies have found that their wallowing behaviour generates and preserves tiny water bodies supporting aquatic life. Over fifty species that directly benefit from capybara-modified habitats have been recorded by scientists; these species are vital in preserving ecosystem health and biodiversity.
