3. Thermoregulation Mechanisms

New studies have shown complex thermoregulation systems in capybaras that go beyond known knowledge. These animals have a well developed system of blood arteries close to their skin surface that facilitates effective heat exchange with their surroundings. Through a mix of behavioural and physiological adjustments, studies have demonstrated that capybaras can preserve ideal body temperature even in demanding circumstances. Their skin features specialised oil glands that create waterproof secretions, allowing them to remain under water for long lengths of time without sacrificing body warmth. Furthermore, scientists have found that their unusual fur structure is very important for temperature control since every hair follicle has specialised muscles that can change the insulating quality of the fur according on the surroundings.
