10. Social Learning Capabilities

Recent behavioural research on capybaras has revealed amazing social learning ability whereby they may pick up new skills and behaviours by seeing group members. Studies of situations of fast diffusion of new behaviours across populations point to complex social learning systems. Young capybaras, according to studies, pick up foraging techniques, predator recognition, and social behaviours mostly by observation and contact with seasoned group members. Research on their behaviour in response to observable results of others’ activities also suggests a degree of social cognition hitherto unheard of in rats.
