6. Late Summer Transition (August)

August brings a minor change in Huanglong as late summer starts to reveal traces of the approaching autumn. While the earliest indicators of seasonal change show up in some plant species, the scene stays rich. The travertine pools remain their brilliant turquoise colour but acquire other tones when shifting light conditions interact with the mineral-rich waters. With warm days and chilly evenings ideal for outdoor discovery, this time offers some of the most consistent weather patterns of the year. Particularly during golden hours, the late summer light offers amazing shooting chances since the sun’s slant accentuates the textures and colours of the pools. Still quite active, wildlife includes numerous species getting ready for the seasonal changes. Summer heat combined with rising moisture produces special meteorological conditions that sometimes produce amazing cloud patterns above the valley.
