3. Late Spring Vibrancy (May)
May marks the entrance of complete spring liveliness in Huanglong, distinguished by an explosion of wildflowers and lush development all over the valley. During this time the travertine pools reach their best clarity and exhibit their well-known blue tones against the verdant surrounds. The temperature becomes more consistent, ideal for touring the whole picturesque area free from summer traffic. A natural carpet of colours that compliments the mineral pools, the alpine meadows come alive with a great variety of wildflowers. Because many species engage in mating rituals and nest-building activities, this time also represents the height of bird-watching possibilities. Clear sky and lots of sunlight improve the visibility of the mineral deposits in the pool, therefore exposing complex formations and patterns under the surface of water. As several species of trees and bushes attain their full leaf, the nearby woods show varying tones of green.
