7.The Neighbors Were Having a BBQ

This interesting event wonderfully shows how canine hunting instincts have evolved in our contemporary society. Dogs still have their ancestral hunting impulses even after thousands of years of domestication; these instincts now show themselves in somewhat different forms. In this specific instance, the delighted dog came back from its “hunting expedition” carrying an unusual trophy: a loaf of bread from the neighbour grill. Reminiscent of its wolf forebears returning with more conventional prey, the picture catches the dog’s obvious delight in its accomplishment. This change from apex predator to bread hunter offers comedy as well as insight into how domestic dogs have modified their innate impulses to fit modern suburban living. Animal behaviourists sometimes point out that such behaviour reflects a perfect mix of ancient impulses meeting modern conditions, where the drive to hunt and retrieve remains strong but the target has developed to match their domesticated habitat.
