10. **The Legend of the Stone Whispers**

The last mythology relates to the unusual acoustic characteristics of several Yellowstone rock formations. Early explorer stories and Native American customs both point to sites in the park where the rocks themselves seem to whisper, generating noises ranging from beautiful humming to clear words. Those who could listen were supposed to get direction from ancestors or spirits via these stone murmurs. Often in line with thermal activity or particular wind patterns, the legend details particular times of day and meteorological circumstances when the whispers are most obviously heard. Some variations of the tale hold that these whispers foretell major catastrophes such geyser eruptions and earthquakes. Although current geology clarifies some of these events by wind interactions with porous rock formations and thermal expansion, the mythology nevertheless adds an air of mystery to visitors’ experiences in some parts of the park.
