8. **The Mysterious Valley of Death**

The story of the Valley of Death, a place claimed to have supernatural powers defying explanation, is maybe the most terrifying of all Yellowstone stories. Many stories going back to the early 1800s point to an isolated valley inside the park where unusual events happen shockingly regularly. The folklore describes a place where odd lights show up at night, where compass needles spin crazily and where animals seem to die without clear reason. Said to be avoiding this region, Native American tribes thought it to be a portal to the spirit realm. This myth is especially fascinating since it precedes the discovery of several fatal gas pockets and hazardous geothermal phenomena in some park locations. Modern research has shown many sites in Yellowstone where low-lying areas allow harmful concentrations of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide to develop “death zones” capable of killing both humans and wildlife.
