5. **The Phantom Waters of Yellowstone Lake**

Many stories have been generated around Yellowstone Lake, especially about inexplicable events seen on its shores. Early stories of ghost canoes that show and vanish in the mist carried spectral beings dressed in traditional Native American clothing. These tales frequently feature descriptions of unusual lights dancing under the surface of the lake and inexplicable whirlpools that seem to defy natural movement. According to the folklore, these visits are related to a sad episode whereby a violent storm claimed the life of a whole tribe hunting party from the lake’s shores. The phantom canoes are reported to show most often during the full moon or when air circumstances produce odd light effects on the surface of the lake.
