3. Honda Beat

Expense: $5,000–$10,000 *
Produced in: 1991-1996
When the Honda Beat was introduced in 1991, it was a very attractive automobile for Japan’s “kei” automotive market. The Beat, created by the renowned Pininfarina, was a roadster with a rear mid-engine and rear-wheel drive system, which is unusual for vehicles in its class. It was a pleasure to drive because of its small size, agile handling, and open-top layout, which prioritized enjoyment and independence over raw speed. The Beat’s lightweight design allowed for enthusiastic performance even with its tiny 656cc engine.

It was mostly sold in Japan, where “kei” cars are eligible for favorable insurance and tax treatment. Its importation has led to a cult following in other regions of the world, despite never having been legally sold elsewhere.
