3 out of 10 people have allergic reactions to pets. Veterinarians say that dog hair doesn’t affect this problem as much as dander and saliva. Breeds that are prone to drooling can cause allergies to become worse.

We at Bright Side decided to check what breeds cause more and fewer allergic reactions so you can pick your dog and minimize all the risks.

1. Boston Terrier vs Bedlington Terrier

Boston terriers are a popular breed, but they have a tendency for excessive mucus, which makes them a poor choice for people with any allergies.

Among terriers, the Bedlington breed is a safer option. These lamb-like dogs are covered in a curly tight coat. Because of their low-to-no shedding fur, this breed is considered more hypoallergenic.

2. King Charles Spaniel vs Irish Water Spaniel

Adorable Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can leave lots of hair on clothes and furniture. This can be a huge problem for people who sufferer from allergies. Also, their long coats can pick up bacteria and dirt.

There is one more very child-friendly and loyal spaniel known as the Irish Water Spaniel. Because of their double-layered coats, any hair and dander remain trapped inside.

3. Bulldog vs Basenji

Bulldogs don’t shed too heavily but they do shed pretty constantly. This means that allergies can become worse with each passing season.

Among short-haired dogs, there can be better options for those who suffer from allergies. Basenji dogs have no odor and limited dander.

4. Pekingese vs Bichon Frise

Because of heavy shedding, the Pekingese breed needs their coat to be brushed several times a week. You can find lots of hair in the house and that can be a trigger for allergies.

If you like small, fluffy dogs, the Bichon Frise breed could be a better option to avoid sneezing. It’s considered a non-shedding dog that’s good for people who live in an apartment.

5. Basset Hound vs Afghan Hound

Basset Hounds are not known as dogs who shed a lot or leave hair all over the house. But the dirt and dander can stay on their bodies, causes allergic reactions in people.

The Afghan Hound does not shed a lot and it has the same pH as human hair. These facts make this breed more hypoallergenic.

6. Pomeranian vs Maltese

Pomeranians are adorable but they have a certain type of protein that they produce, which is concentrated in the saliva, urine, and dander of dogs. Because of this, they can cause allergies more often than other breeds.

If you’re searching for a small pooch and have any allergies, the Maltese breed is more suitable. They don’t have an undercoat so they shed very little. These dogs are also good for small apartments.

7. Schipperke vs Affenpinscher

Schipperkes are not recommended for an apartment lifestyle. Their saliva may cause a specific reaction in people and you may end up sneezing a lot.

There is one more miniature black dog who is also active but less allergy-inducing. Affenpinschers have a slow-growing coat that doesn’t shed a lot, wiry fur that retains dander, and very little drool.

8. Pumi vs Poodle

Wavy-haired small dogs are so charming but not every breed is good if you suffer from allergies. For example, the Pumi breed is not in the list of hypoallergenic dogs and not recommended for a small apartment. The coat consists of 50 percent soft hair and 50 percent harsher hair. Pumi needs combing every three to six weeks. The better choice would be a poodle. They produce less dander and smell less.

9. Siberian Husky vs Samoyed

Huskies are very friendly and have beautiful eyes but they’re not great for people with allergies. They leave hair everywhere so you’ll likely find dead skin and dander all over the place.

As a solution for big dogs that sometimes look very similar to huskies, you can get the Samoyed. Experts say that although they shed a lot, this breed has less drooling that can cause allergy.

10. Skye Terrier vs Shih Tzu

Here’s another doggie duo that look similar to each other, but due to nature, have a different effect on people’s health. Skye Terriers produce more allergens than the Shih Tzu breed.

It’s also important to know that when the hair is long, the shedding hairs don’t fall to the ground or on furniture, so you sneeze less.

Which dog would you like to have? Would you like to have one or several pets?
