Inspired by the most effective swimmers in the natural world, engineers have created hull designs with marine mammal hydrodynamic characteristics. By minimizing water resistance and turbulence, these bio-inspired forms produce greatly lowered acoustic signals. Incorporating elements like ideal bow forms and precisely shaped surfaces that let water flow naturally around the submarine, advanced computer modeling has helped refine these designs. Comparatively to conventional submarine designs, this natural approach to construction has produced up to 40% decrease in hull-generated noise.

4. Active Noise Cancellation Systems


Modern active noise cancellation technology uses clever arrays of sensors and emitters all around the hull of the submarine. These devices track underwater sounds constantly and create exact anti-phase waves to instantly eliminate noise characteristics. The most recent versions of this technology can dynamically reduce noise over a wide band of frequencies by adjusting to ambient variables and changing operating conditions. By up to 30 decibels, this advanced technique can lower mechanical noise, rendering submarines essentially undetectable for passive sonar detection.
