5. Pain Relief and Management

Foot massages have proven scientifically supported, not only anecdotal benefits for pain relief. Whether acute or chronic, our neural system becomes sensitized while we are in pain, which increases our sense of it. Through a number of processes, foot massages can assist break the cycle of discomfort. First, the stimulation of nerve terminals in the foot can set off the gate control theory of pain, in which non-painful stimuli closes the “gates” to painful input, therefore preventing pain signals from reaching the brain. Second, as was already noted, foot massages set off endorphins—the body’s natural painkillers. These endorphins not only help to lower pain sensation but also provide euphoria, which adds to the general enjoyable effect of a foot massage. Foot massages also help with pain brought on by disorders such plantar fasciitis, arthritis, and peripheral neuropathy by lowering muscle tension and increasing circulation. Regular foot massages can be a useful supplemental therapy for those with chronic pain issues, therefore perhaps lowering dependency on painkillers and raising general quality of life.
