9. Great Salt Lake’s Antelope Island Viewpoint, Utah, USA

Particularly from the raised Buffalo Point observation deck, the Antelope Island State Park offers an amazing vantage point for seeing the pink portions of the Great Salt Lake. Perched on one of the island’s highest points, this well built viewing platform provides guests with a broad panoramic view of the pink and purple areas of the lake juxtaposing with its usual blue waves. The observation station has been placed deliberately to catch the most striking color changes resulting from the presence of halophilic bacteria in several areas of the lake. Several tiered levels in the viewing area let photographers get unusual angles and viewpoints independent of the time of day. Educational exhibits help to clarify the intricate ecosystem supporting the unusual tint of the lake as well as the variety of life found there. At sunset, when the departing light produces an amazing show of colors on the water’s surface, the site is especially breathtaking. Expert guides often provide interpretative presentations on the geological past of the lake and the microorganisms causing its pink colors. The building comprises high-powered telescopes for thorough study of the lake’s surface features and weather-protected viewing areas.
